General Notes
The Director of Industry and Research Relations manages the team of staff serving industry interests for the Department of Computer Science. Works to identify, develop, acquire, and steward computer science funding opportunities with a primary emphasis on research funding. Cultivates industry relationships with organized research units and centers to facilitate funding for those units with a particular emphasis on initiatives for artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics. The position also carries secondary objectives pertaining to developing new industry relationships likely to culminate in enhanced recruitment opportunities for students.
Purpose
This role serves as the primary point of contact for industry inquiries and requests for both external and internal stakeholders to engage further with supporting students, faculty, and research in the Department of Computer Science at UT Austin. The primary position responsibility is to identify, develop, acquire, and steward industry relationships culminating in funding opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Engage companies through a holistic, industry-centered approach and works with key stakeholders within Computer Science to build partnership roadmaps, integrating brand, research, and workforce development outcomes to include leading the development of highly competitive proposals and new programs that respond to the needs of the industry and supports the strategic plan outlined by Computer Science leadership.
- Supervise staff members overseeing the execution of Friends of Computer Science, other talent acquisition programming, and research center event deliverables.
- Monitor proposal deadlines, prepare, and edit proposals, and manage proposal submissions and maintains appropriate documentation, including engagement activities, proposal tracking, contact reports, donor strategies, and forecasting in the university’s VIP information system.
- Maintain a rigorous schedule of contacts with corporate representatives in keeping with a comprehensive moves management plan in collaboration with departments, colleges, and other internal teams to coordinate communication strategies, track objectives, and deliver partnership success.
- Ensure that stewardship and reporting requirements are met to sustain successful partnerships.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- 5 Years of experience
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with constant and multiple ongoing deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Must have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to think strategically and creatively and work well under pressure.
- Ability to manage long-term projects, prioritize, and proactively ensure deadlines are met.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s, MBA, or PhD in one of the following disciplines: Computer Science/Engineering, Mathematics, Business, Life Sciences, Engineering
- Experience in cultivating and nurturing relationships with key strategic partners in technical sectors, e.g., computer science, semiconductor, aerospace, etc.
- Management level experience, supervising, and leading initiatives
- Experience developing, executing, analyzing research and business objectives.
- Experience with developing and implementing strategies for acquiring new leads, retaining, and upgrading existing leads and relationships.
- Experience in initiating new and innovative engagement and outreach programs.
- Experience in holistic funding opportunities.
- Experience working in a setting with changing priorities and an evolving list of stakeholders.
- Experience working with high-level administrators, executives, and professionals.
- Experience in preparing written gift proposals, fund agreements, and collateral materials.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of standard office software (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, etc.).
Salary Range
$130,000 + depending on qualifications
