Security sensitive; three-year driving record and criminal background checks conducted on selected candidate. Hiring decision is contingent upon applicant clearing checks. May work four ten-hour shifts, nine-eighty shifts, or alternate work schedule. Applicant required to successfully complete physical abilities testing to remove/replace a large manhole cover weighing 120 lbs and drag 4 ft.; lift/carry 78 lbs, pull 125 lbs, lift two-45 lbs of weight up a ladder, kneeling work in confined spaces, and other tasks.
Purpose
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Process Controls, assumes primary responsibility for developing the implementation plans for Power Plant and Chilling Stations control systems, SCADA energy and protection relays and systems, and technical oversight of these systems.
Responsibilities
- Oversees, mentor, and provides technical and coordination support of Process Controls group. Set expectations for programmers, perform yearly appraisal, and report out issues to Assistant Director. Act as the backup for the Assistant Director as needed.
- Consider and recommend changes to the utility system controls, including substations and electrical distribution controls, generation controls and provide technical oversight of systems that recommend optimal dispatch.
- Maintain various Distributed Control System (DCS), and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programs and Human Machine Interface (HMI) applications throughout the power plant and chilling stations, as well as SCADA controls. Provide technical support to these systems. Troubleshoot programmable logic controllers, distributed controls, and related applications. Maintain , recommend and implement modifications and upgrades.
- Provide guidance and recommendations regarding the use of technology in the operational process. Support the mission and policies and procedures of utilities and the university. Drive UT vehicle. Maintain acceptable driving record required by UT System Policy UTS157.

- Follow all University and UEM safety policies and procedures, take required safety training, and identify and report safety hazards. Perform work tasks in a safe manner, wear the proper personal protective equipment, and report near misses and incidents. - Perform other related functions as assigned. Work is performed in accordance with normal trade practices and is inspected for conformity to standards, quality and quantity by journey-level employees or supervisor. Attends staff meetings, safety training and meetings. Attend plant operation and maintenance training courses. Complete plant operation and maintenance training courses. Training certification required within 18 months. Required to carry University cell phone.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering or an equivalent experience of 10 years in the design, implementation, and interface of real time control systems utilizing computers, networking, PLC, and DCS. Experience in a higher education environment is required. Experience with Rockwell (RSView, RSLogix), Emerson (Ovation), and GE Software (GE-Cimplicity, Power Management Control System) is required as well. SCADA and power management equipment, SEL relays, and metering is required. Familiarity with communication protocols such us Modbus, ControlNet, FieldBus, and OPC are a must. Applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
5 years experience in the operations of gas and steam turbines, industrial chillers, and associated equipment. Experience in power plant administration, supervision, and management.
Driving Required
This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
Salary Range
$120,000
