Purpose
Oversee federal and multi-state payroll tax reporting and deposits for the University. In addition, analyze and account for federal income tax and handle other tax issues as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Review and prepare Form 1099 NEC, 1099 MISC, and 1042-S tax forms. Assist with decisions regarding independent contractor and employee classifications. Review reports and update independent contractor records as needed. Communicate updates with related departments and coordinate with other Tax Services team members for proper reporting. Reconcile 1042S tax accounts throughout the year. Respond to student and independent contractor questions about tax forms issued by the University.
- Monitor and assist with employee federal tax issues. Oversee issuance of W-2s and W-2Cs. Respond to employee questions regarding tax forms issued by the University. Process IRS tax deposits and prepare quarterly IRS Form 941 and annual IRS forms, such as Form 945 and Form 1042. Research the IRS Code and interpret regulations to ensure compliance with tax laws. Correspond with IRS and Social Security Administration regarding tax issues.
- Track and report Unrelated Business Income tax (UBIT) activities throughout the year. This includes logging UBIT activities as notifications are received in email and other sources, following up with departments on outstanding items, and preparing supporting documentation for year-end reporting.
- Analyze system requirements and business process changes needed to comply with laws and policies. Collaborate with technical support and other cross functional teams as needed to help evaluate, test and implement changes to computer and software systems.
- Act as the point of contact within the Tax Services department for sales and use tax & ad valorem tax for the University. Respond to related inquiries and handle required remittance and reporting of these taxes.
- Other related functions as assigned, including backup during high volume periods and vacancies.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree: Finance, Accounting or Business Administration and six years of relevant experience.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to multi-task with an attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively or independently depending on the situation with minimal supervision.
- Ability to prioritize tasks with potentially overlapping deadlines.
- Ability to be flexible with schedules during high volume periods, such as annual tax reporting season December through March.
- Ability to use basic and intermediate Microsoft Excel functions for financial analysis.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
- Higher education and/or tax experience.
- Experience with DEFINE.
- Experience with Workday.
Salary Range
$70,000 + depending on qualifications
Working Conditions
- Location in Austin, Texas.
- This position is currently remote but can require visits to campus on occasion.
- Please note that work arrangements are subject to change based on university policy.
- Standard UT schedule, Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
